1. On your group's wiki page, describe the main characters in your text. What makes them interesting? What is their story or background? Why are you drawn to them? Conversely, are there any characters that you just cannot stand? Why not? (A)

There are many main characters in the Act of Treason but the real main characters are Mitch Rapp and Gavrilo Gazich. Mitch Rapp is an undercover anti-terrorist who works for the CIA and is trying to find whoever attempted to kill the president, Josh Alexander. Gavrilo Gazich is a trained contract killer who had attempted to kill the president Josh Alexander. Mitch Rapp is a very interesting character in part because he never follows the rules and he works without the CIA's permission. Gavrilo Gazich is a very complex character who is very sly and clever which are two aspects of his personality that is needed to be an assassin. I am drawn to Mitch Rapp especially because he is a very intelligent man with the skill set of an excellent anti-terrorist. Also, he is very humorous in the way he behaves. None of us don't really have any characters that we cannot stand. All in all, the first section of the book was very suspenseful, adventurous, and an exciting read.

Group Summary:

This book discussion would have gone better if everyone could do his or her jobs. One person couldn’t do his work because of family matters. It’s ok, but the rest of us have to work harder because we have to do his work now. But we will get through it and hopefully everything will turn out good. Everyone likes the book so far. It’s very hard to put the book down and stop reading. It catches your attention and makes you want to read on. We made a good decision on what book we wanted to read.

Sonny Ray’s favorite part of the book was when a secret service woman named Maria Rivera saw a man behind a tree. She saw him holding something in his hand, and had a red baseball hat on and sunglasses. He suddenly ducked behind a tree, then an explosion went off. Frankie’s favorite part of the book was when Mitch Rapp was in Europe, spying on an assassin. He witnessed the assassin go up to a car and talk to a guy in the car. Then there was a little flash, and Mitch saw him still talking to the guy. Mitch was also an assassin and knew that he killed the guy in the middle of the street and no one even noticed. Mitch realized that he was spying on a really good assassin and this was no job he could make no mistakes.

The Russians put a motion sensor above the door.

2. "He's rumored to have operated in Africa, mostly the east side... Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda, but they don't have anything concrete on him."

3. "We can get this over with sooner rather than later."

4. "Don't make a sound or I'll slit your throat."

5. "Keep telling yourself that. You might actually believe it someday."

Group Leader:

This book is the perfect level for us. It uses words that are just the right vocabulary for us. There are a few difficult words that we don't understand but its alright. I think this book is meant for young adults to read, especially most high school kids. It is made for that grade level because that is what those kids enjoy reading about, action and adventure. It is a fast pace book with a lot of drama and suspense. This book is mainly consisted of dialogue from many different characters. Overall, this book is an fairly easy book to read.

Questions:

1. In chapter 27 why was Kennedy worried about McMahon and Juarez being upset?

2. What did Rapp know wore off of Gazich when he looked at him?

3. What was the place called where the CIA trains their recruits?

4. Where was Stu Garret going? (What building)

5. Who did McMahon work for?

Quotes:
  1. “He could wait one more week until Air force Two.” Pg 184
  2. “It was obvious by the prisoner’s pasty skin that the morphine had worn off.” Pg 174.
  3. “She sat nervously in the small reception area with two very large men staring at her and one very small woman ignoring her.” Pg 198.
  4. “Garret pulled the hood over his head and zipped the jacket all the way up under his double chin.” Pg 203.
  5. “Kennedy sat behind her desk and watched and listened as mcmahon and Juarez work themselves into a frenzy.” Pg 211

The tone of the book so far, I think is suspense. I think the author does a good job using description in times of great suspense. “Now take a few deep breaths, and just think about how happy you’re going to be when this is over.” The elevator doors opened and they entered. Speyer turned around and leaned against the back wall. Rapp did the same and slid close to him so their shoulders were touching. He wanted it to actually look like they liked each other. The doors closed and the elevator began to move. Rapp smiled and asked, “So how long have you been in the banking business?” “Please don’t shoot me.” Rapp got the feeling positive reinforcement didn’t work well with Speyer. He put his mouth up to Speyer’s ear and said, “If you fucking bring it up one more time…I might.” He then moved away and smiled. “All you have to do is stand still and stick your arms out. I’ll take care of the rest.”
This is an example of the way he uses suspenseful situations. It seems as though the author portrays limited views of the situation to excite the reader.

Sonny Ray Dominguez(C):

The book club this week wasn't what I expected. Overall, everyone did their part that was due on Friday. However, we did not answer the questions that were asked of us. To be honest, everyone, including myself, forgot about answering that questions that Frankie posted on this wikispace page. With this aside, we all performed what we were supposed to do. Our book club was very good. We talked about various parts of the book and how we felt about them, but we did not fill the entire 45 minutes that we were supposed to use up. We spent the last ten minutes talking about different topics. I hope that our next book club will be more productive.

“How in the hell did the FBI find out so fast?”

“Stop asking questions. This isn’t a fucking debate club. It’s a benevolent
dictatorship, and I’m not feeling very benevolent right now, so unless you want to find your ass transferred out of the Clandestine Service and into some secretarial pool at one of the offsite locations, you’re going to do everything I tell you to do for the next two hours. Can you do that?”

“Mitch,” Kennedy cautioned, “stay away from him until I say the time is right.”
“Fine, but we are going to kill him, aren’t we?”
“Yes, we are.”

“Remember…smile,” Rapp whispered. “We’re supposed to be having fun.”

What did Rapp do wrong using excessive force?

What did the reporter from the Times hear about Rapp?

What was the reporter’s story going to be about?

What was the setting of the photos Rapp was looking at of Julian?

Who did Juarez the article in the Times look like it was written by?

Group Leader: Vince Flynn portrays many vivid and graphic pictures in The Act of Treason. There are many scenes with dead people and there are also many scenes containing descriptions of blood and where some of the kill shots were located on the body. Vince Flynn is trying to tell the reader exactly what the dead people look like and how exactly they died in terms of where they were shot. All of the images written in The Act of Treason have to do operatives and the bad guys killing each other in a gruesome battle after gruesome battle. Vince Flynn does an excellent job in describing every crime scene.
